Waiting on Wednesday (2) : Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaira

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Happy New Year's Day, everyone! This week I have chosen to feature a YA Contemporary novel.

Love Letters to the Dead

by Ava Dellaira
Publisher: Macmillan FSG
Release: April 1st 2014
Pages: 323
It begins as an assignment for English class: Write a letter to a dead person. Laurel chooses Kurt Cobain because her sister, May, loved him. And he died young, just like May did. Soon, Laurel has a notebook full of letters to people like Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Amelia Earhart, Heath Ledger, and more; though she never gives a single one of them to her teacher. She writes about starting high school, navigating new friendships, falling in love for the first time, learning to live with her splintering family. And, finally, about the abuse she suffered while May was supposed to be looking out for her. Only then, once Laurel has written down the truth about what happened to herself, can she truly begin to accept what happened to May. And only when Laurel has begun to see her sister as the person she was; lovely and amazing and deeply flawed; can she begin to discover her own path.
My Notes:

I stumbled upon this book on NetGalley one day and immediately I was like this is such a nice cover! And then one thing led to the other, it wound up on my WoW post :P But to all seriousness, the title and synopsis of this book sound very interesting. Love Letters to the Dead is a book about growing up, about accepting and forgiving. It seems like both Laurel and her sister May have some troublesome past. With May gone, I can't imagine how much Laurel struggled to move on. I don't read contemporary novels that much but this is definitely one I want to check out.

    1. Methinks Macmillan and HarperCollins have the best cover arts among all publishers, so I'm excited to see what else they have coming up! And thanks for nominating me, I will have to see what that is exactly :)

  6. I agree, the cover is what initially drew me in but the synopsis sounds great, too. I'm pretty picky about my contemporary as well, but this one is really interesting.
